eAU: Sick note
An electronic sick note, is a digital version of a sick note issued by a doctor, sent to the patient's insurer, and then to their employer. It captures all important details for a patient that needs compensation or rest.
The Problem
The primary objective was to redesign an existing electronic sick note (e-sicknote) platform to address usability issues and maximize its value proposition. The e-sicknote was envisioned as a tool to streamline processes, bolster security, and enhance convenience for patients, employers, and healthcare providers alike.
Initial analysis revealed that the existing platform fell short of its potential, particularly in terms of user experience for medical professionals. The original form design imposed an unnecessary burden on doctors with hectic schedules, hindering the platform's adoption.
In response to these challenges, a comprehensive redesign was undertaken. The focus was on optimizing the platform's functionality to deliver a more intuitive and efficient experience for doctors while maintaining the core benefits of enhanced convenience, security, and efficiency for all stakeholders.
The Process
Problem Identification: A thorough assessment of the existing e-sick note platform revealed significant usability challenges, primarily affecting medical professionals. The complex and time-consuming form completion process was identified as a key obstacle hindering platform adoption. Furthermore, the platform's potential to optimize workflows for patients, doctors, and employers was not fully realized.
Design Objectives: To address these shortcomings, a comprehensive redesign was initiated with the goal of transforming the e-sick note into a user-centric, efficient, and secure digital tool. Key objectives included streamlining the doctor's experience, enhancing overall user satisfaction, bolstering security measures, and ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulations.
Team Formation and Collaboration: A multidisciplinary team, comprising a product manager, a frontend and backend developer, and a product designer (ME!), was assembled to drive the redesign process. This collaborative approach facilitated the integration of diverse perspectives and expertise, ensuring a holistic solution. To establish a solid foundation for the redesign, a comprehensive discovery phase was initiated, involving in-depth user research and data analysis to gain valuable insights into user needs and behaviors.
The Solution
The cornerstone of our product was the composer module, which initially housed the e-sick note form. Recognizing the form’s limitations, stemming from its early development stage, a comprehensive redesign was initiated.
To inform the process, existing data and user feedback were meticulously analyzed. The form underwent a thorough overhaul, prioritizing essential information fields and eliminating redundant elements. A rigorous evaluation of each field's significance was conducted, resulting in a logical and intuitive field order. To ensure visual consistency and enhance user experience, the form's design elements were aligned with the newly established design system.
A user-centric approach was adopted throughout the redesign process. Direct customer feedback was sought to understand their preferences and pain points. Insights gleaned from these interactions were instrumental in optimizing the form's layout, content, and overall usability.
The overarching goal was to transform the e-sick note from a mere form into a user-centric tool that enhances efficiency, security, and convenience for all stakeholders. Specific objectives included:
Simplifying the form completion process for doctors.
Enhancing the overall user experience for all platform users.
Aligning the platform with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
